Teach Your Kids to Code Without a Computer: DIY Coding Game for Kids

This DIY coding game for kids is a fantastic way to introduce basic coding principles without the need for technology. It teaches children the concept of sequencing and logical thinking in a hands-on, playful way.

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Bottle caps (as many as you can collect; we used water bottle caps)
  • Sticker paper in various colors (we used yellow, green, and pink) or plain paper and glue
  • Small stickers for decoration (we used paw print stickers from the Eyelike Stickers: Baby Animals book, but any small stickers will work)
  • A deck of playing cards (we used Montessori animal cards, but any will do)

How to Create Your DIY Coding Game for Kids:

1. Cut the Arrows:
  • From your sticker sheets, cut out three types of arrows:
    • 25 straight arrows
    • 8 right-turn arrows
    • 8 left-turn arrows
  • We recommend making more straight arrows than turns to allow for more straightforward paths.
    2. Prepare the Bottle Caps:
    • tick one arrow on each bottle cap. If you don’t have sticker paper, you can draw or paint the arrows directly onto the caps, or cut them from plain paper and glue them on.
    • For an extra twist, place small stickers (like animals or symbols) on some of the caps. These will act as “special” pieces during the game. We used paw print stickers for this part!
    3. Set Up the Route:
    • Lay your cards face down on the floor to create a route or path. Some of the cards can be turned face up to act as obstacles.

      How to Play:

Once your route is set, it’s time to start coding!

      1. Navigate the Route:
      • Your child will “code” their way through the course by placing bottle caps with arrows on each face-down card. Each arrow tells them which way to go: forward, left, or right. This mimics the idea of coding commands.
      2. Obstacle Course Challenge:
      • If your child encounters an obstacle (a face-up card), they must use one of the “special” bottle caps with the sticker on it. This adds a challenge and makes the game more fun, as they learn how to navigate around roadblocks.
      Mix It Up:
      • The fun part is that the path is never the same twice. Encourage your child to create their own unique routes and challenges using the same cards and bottle caps. It’s a great way to keep the game fresh and exciting!

Our daughter loves this game kids because it allows her to be both creative and strategic. She enjoys setting up different routes, navigating them, and figuring out how to solve the challenges along the way. It’s a fantastic bonding experience and a great way to learn basic coding concepts without using a computer.
