Since our daughter became bored with all her existing board games, we decided to create a new, fun game to play. We opted for a board game featuring pawns and dice, complete with enjoyable tasks to solve.

So, here’s today’s game:

Supplies needed:

  • Plain paper (Any type of paper will work. Cardboard is ideal, but we used copy paper.)
  • A few sheets of colored paper (any color you like)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • One dice
  • Pawns (we used Grossery Gang figurines as pawns)

How it’s done:

  1. Cut the colored paper into small squares, rectangles, or circles. (We cut approximately 1.5-inch/3.5 cm squares, six squares of each color: green, yellow, orange, and blue.)
  2. Cut two larger rectangles for the Start and Finish.
  3. Glue the squares onto the sheet of paper or cardboard, creating a path from Start to Finish.
  4. Write a task of your choice on each square. (We used a pencil so that we can erase the tasks and replace them with others if we get bored.) A Few Examples of Tasks (Choose tasks that are appropriate for your child’s age):
    • Give a hug to another player.
    • Jump on one foot five times.
    • Name three green objects that are in your field of view.
    • Say a five-letter word.
    • Name three kitchen objects.
    • Make a rhyme.
    • Name three birds.
    • Name three human organs.
    • Do five squats.
    • Sing the chorus of a song, etc.

How to play DYI Board Game for Kids of all ages

  1. The youngest player starts the game.
  2. Each player rolls the die and moves their pawn accordingly.
  3. On their turn, players must complete the task written on the square their pawn lands on.
  4. If a player can’t complete a task, their pawn must move one square backward.
  5. The first one to reach the Finish wins.

It’s a fun game to make and play. We decorated ours with stickers from our sticker books.

The game board can also be drawn by hand. It’s faster and easier.

Note: There are many downloadable templates available online, but it’s a more rewarding experience to create the game from scratch with your kids.

Have fun!
